Beware of Unemployment Fraud

Many consumers have recently found that fraudsters are using their personal information to illegally file for unemployment benefits. They are using the slower processing times due to the COVID-19 pandemic to work in their favor.

Unfortunately, consumers are not realizing that they have become the victim of unemployment fraud until they receive a notice from their state unemployment benefits office or their employer in reference to their assumed application for unemployment. If you believe you may have been the victim of unemployment fraud, be sure to do these five things:

1. Be Aware. If someone calls, emails, or sends you a text message asking you to wire money, send cash, or put money on a gift card, this is a scam. State unemployment agencies would never ask for repayment in this manner.

2. Tell your employer about the fraud right away, and keep a record of who you spoke to and when.

3. Report the fraud to your state unemployment benefits agency.
Also make sure to keep a record of any confirmation emails, case numbers, names, badge numbers, times, and dates.

4. Go to IdentityTheft.gov to report the fraud to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
The FTC can also assist you in placing a free, one-year fraud alert on your credit, closing any fraudulent accounts that were opened in your name, and provide you with free credit reports.

5. Review your credit report often.
Make sure to review your credit report for accuracy at least once a year.

Also be aware that typically, the unemployment checks are deposited into accounts that the fraudsters control; however, sometimes they are deposited into the consumer’s real account. If this occurs, the fraudsters most likely will call, email, or text you in an attempt to acquire the money. If this occurs, do not send them the money, and instead follow the steps above.
