Vendor Payment & Payroll Direct Deposit Change Scams

We have recently seen a rise in fraud attacks against businesses, with vendor payment scams and payroll direct deposit change scams being the most prevalent.

What are Vendor Payment Scams?

With vendor payment fraud, fraudsters impersonate a trusted vendor or business partner who is requesting that ACH or wire transfer payments be made to a new account. They trick businesses into sending funds because the request appears to be coming from a known vendor, and is often sent on a real invoice.

What are Payroll Direct Deposit Change Scams?

This type of fraud occurs when a fraudster compromises an individual's email account, and sends a request to their employer's payroll department requesting a change to their payroll direct deposit method. The company then sends that person's pay to a fraudulent account.

Always verify any unusual invoices and changes to payment or direct deposit methods directly with your vendor or employee. This simple step could save your business thousands of dollars.

Please be aware of the following warning signs when making a payment via check, ACH, or wire transfer:
  • Email, text messages, FAX, and caller ID are not secure. Do not trust them without verifying directly with the sender or caller using a known contact method.

  • Be especially suspicious of urgent requests to make changes to established payment methods. No transaction is so important that you cannot take the time to fully verify the request.

  • Do not trust someone just because they have a copy of an invoice, previous email thread, your name, your phone number, your email address, etc. An incredible amount of information can be exposed from just a single, successful phishing attack.
