Phishing: Don't Take the Bait

What is Phishing?

Phishing is when you receive an email, text, or call that seems to be coming from a company or person you know. Unfortunately, it turns out that they are scammers. They are trying to obtain personal and/or secure information from you by having you click a link or verbally provide password or login credentials that they can then use to steal your money or identity.

The Bait – What to Look For

  • Scammers frequently use familiar company names or pretend to be someone you know
  • They ask you to click on a link or provide passwords, login credentials, or bank account information. They then can install damaging programs on your computer to lock you out and steal your personal information.
  • They will often pressure you to act immediately—telling you that something bad will happen if you don’t

Avoid the Hook – How to Protect Yourself

  • Look up the website or the phone number for the person or company who is contacting you
  • Call that person or company directly, using a number you know to be correct, not the number provided in the email or text.
  • Tell them about the message you received to see if it was legitimate
  • Look for potential scam tip-offs—you don’t have an account with the company; the message is misspelled, missing your name, or uses bad grammar; the person asks for personal information, including passwords.
  • Make sure to keep the security on your computer up to date and back up your data often
  • Consider establishing multi-factor authentication
  • Change any compromised passwords immediately and don’t use them for any other accounts
