Equifax 2017 Data Breach Settlement

    Are You Eligible?

Equifax has agreed to pay up to $700 million to help compensate victims of their 2017 data breach. 147 million people were compromised when hackers stole personal data from Equifax servers. These people can now see if they are eligible to submit a claim to recover some or all of the money spent or lost as a result of the database hack. Payments from the settlement can be used to cover costs such as freezing and unfreezing accounts, unauthorized charges, as well as expenses resulting in the attempt to further protect against identity theft.

During the data breach, hackers were able to gain access to credit card numbers, driver’s license information, Social Security numbers, addresses, birthdates, as well as other personal data stored on the Equifax servers. As part of the investigation, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) determined that Equifax failed to take reasonable steps to properly secure its network.

To determine if you were affected by the data breach, the FTC has an online tool available on their website at FTC.gov. You will need to enter your last name and the last six digits of your Social Security number. If you determine that your information was exposed as a result of the data breach, you can file a claim on the Equifax Data Breach Settlement website. You will need to gather any documents and/or receipts that show the expenses you accumulated to recover from identity theft. You must submit your claim by January 22, 2020.
