Giving Back

At Independent Bank, giving back to our communities is as important to us as giving loans or holding deposits.

Giving back to people and communities

For over 150 years, it’s been our mission to serve our communities in ways that go beyond the walls of our banks. In neighborhoods across Michigan, we take part in financial literacy efforts, raise money to help fight cancer, and give back in many ways to strengthen our communities. Our employees are involved in area schools, arts and cultural organizations, community boards, and places of worship. We’re your friends and neighbors, locally invested the same way you are.

Independent Bank has been "investing" locally since 2014

What began as an opportunity to give back in "150 Ways in 150 Days" in 2014 during our 150th Anniversary transpired into an annual donation campaign to invest in the lives of our customers and communities. Over the last four years, we have developed different campaigns to give away monetarily to different schools and non-profits.

Donation Campaigns

Giving back has always been a top priority for Independent Bank, and since 2014, we have taken part in annual campaigns where we invest in our local communities in a variety of ways. Whether it is local schools or non-profits, we have worked to make a positive difference in the lives of those we serve.

Be the Difference Day

Since 2016, Independent Bank employees have been giving back to our communities in a unique way. Every Columbus Day, all Independent Bank locations close their doors so that each employee can spend the day volunteering with their team at a non-profit of their choice. Our employees select from a variety of organizations, including food pantries, animal shelters, nursing homes, etc.

2016

Independent Bank closed its offices on Columbus Day, October 10, 2016, to participate in an all-employee volunteer day. Independent Bank’s employees took part in “Making A Difference Day,” where they volunteered in teams across the state.

Employees selected from a variety of organizations and non-profits throughout their local communities to give back for the day. Taking part in a myriad of activities, ranging from beautifying the Fred Meijer Grand River Valley Trail, to collecting food for the Mount Pleasant Food Bank, to packing sack lunches at IM Kids 3rd Meal, the Independent Bank teams throughout Michigan definitely made a positive difference in their communities. See our video below for more details on our volunteer day!

2017

For the second year, Independent Bank closed on Columbus Day, October 9, 2017, to their annual "Making A Difference Day." Employees volunteered across Michigan and parts of Ohio at various organizations.

Some of the organizations that employees gave back to include Habitat for Humanity of Kent County and Lapeer-Tuscola Counties, the Detroit Zoo, Forgotten Harvest, and Mt. Pleasant Public Schools.

2018

Once again, Independent Bank was closed on Columbus day to participate in the 3rd annual "Making A Difference Day" volunteer initiative. Employees volunteered at 80+ organizations across Michigan and parts of Ohio. Some of the organizations include Akron-Canton Regional Food Bank, Friends of the White Pine Trail, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Potter Park Zoological Society, and Habitat for Humanity.

2019

Independent Bank closed its offices on Columbus Day, October 14, 2019, for its fourth annual all-employee “Making A Difference Day,” where all employees volunteered in teams across Michigan and parts of Ohio. For the second year in a row, as part of their “Investing in Volunteering” initiative, the Bank also donated $100,000 to the various organizations in which they volunteered.

Employees selected from a variety of organizations and non-profits throughout their local communities to give back for the day. In Grand Rapids, employees built townhomes with Habitat for Humanity of Kent County; in Ionia, employees packed sack lunches at IM Kids 3rd Meal; and in Saginaw, employees assisted with cleaning at the Mustard Seed Women’s Shelter.

2020

Independent Bank was thrilled to participate in its fifth annual all-employee “Making a Difference Day” on Columbus Day, October 12, 2020. Although this year’s activities looked a little different due to the COVID-19 pandemic, employees were still able to volunteer in teams across Michigan and parts of Ohio for the day.

For the third year in a row, as part of their “Investing in Volunteering” initiative, the Bank also donated $110,000 to the various organizations in which they volunteered. These funds were collected from Employee Jeans Days, where employees contribute to wear jeans on Fridays, as well as an additional match and contribution from the Bank.
