Independent Bank recently attended the groundbreaking of Riverbend at Capital, a new mixed-use affordable and workforce housing development in Battle Creek, Michigan. The Bank is helping to finance this new affordable housing development.
The approximately $30.5 million project, developed by Edison Community Partners and Battle Creek Unlimited, will transform a vacant former Kmart site into a vibrant mixed-use community. Riverbend at Capital will include 80 units of affordable and workforce housing, along with a multipurpose community center that will house an early childhood learning center and additional community services.
Independent Bank and West Shore Bank are providing a total of $20 million in construction financing to support the project. West Shore Bank is participating in the financing alongside Independent Bank.
The groundbreaking took place on June 11, 2026, marking an important milestone for the first phase of a broader redevelopment strategy designed to reconnect core neighborhoods with downtown Battle Creek, support the local economy and improve quality of life for residents.

As the first phase of a larger redevelopment effort, Riverbend at Capital is designed to bring new life to an underutilized site while supporting long-term neighborhood connection and economic activity in Battle Creek. The project will provide new housing options for residents and create space for services that support families and the surrounding community.
