The new headquarters represents an exciting chapter for Independent Bank, bringing employees together in the heart of downtown while creating opportunities to strengthen connections with customers, business leaders and community partners.
The building also features a flexible gathering space designed to accommodate qualifying business and community meetings of up to 40 people. This space reflects Independent Bank's commitment to creating a welcoming environment where people can connect, collaborate and build meaningful relationships.
“We wanted this building to be more than an office,” said Independent Bank Chief Operating Officer Christopher Michaels. The space was designed to bring people together, encourage conversations and support the local relationships that are central to the bank's mission.
The historic building at 98 Ottawa has long been part of Grand Rapids' financial and commercial landscape. The State Bank of Michigan established its presence at the property in 1903, followed by several other financial institutions over the decades. Independent Bank purchased the property in 2024 and the adjacent 96 Monroe Center property in 2025, further demonstrating its investment in downtown Grand Rapids.
With the opening of its new headquarters, Independent Bank strengthened its presence in the heart of the city while continuing to serve personal and business customers at its downtown and East Beltline banking offices.
