Whipping Up Delicious Summer Foods

By Independent Bank June 28 2017 Savings Tips

How to indulge without going broke

Blog - Cheap Summer Food

Summer is a time of indulgence. Everyone loves enjoying the long days, and warm weather. It is also a time when music festivals, picnics, and other festivities take place. While summer is supposed to be fun, it can often be costly too. Summer food, for example, is a significant expense during the warmer months. Don’t worry though, we have some ways to save big on your food intake during the summer, while still indulging in all the things the warm weather has to offer.

Hit the Farmer’s Market Late in the Day and Don’t Have a Set List

Getting to the farmer’s market bright and early might get you the pick of the produce litter, but if you are looking to save a buck going to the market early, or having a set list of what you need to pick up, can be costly. Experts suggest heading to the market about an hour or so before closing. At this time, most vendors are looking to unload some of their produce so it doesn’t go to waste. You may also score a great deal on your favorite summer food if you are willing to buy several different items. Don’t be afraid to haggle and ask questions. Most vendors are happy to strike a deal later in the day.

You’ll also want to hold off on fruits like peaches and cherries until the season is in full swing. It might be tempting to aim for the first fruits of the season if you are eyeing your favorite summer food, but demand is high, and supply is traditionally low, so waiting a few weeks is sure to get you a better deal. Experts also suggest forgoing a shopping list and working with produce that is a great deal instead. You may even discover a fruit or veggie you love that you had never tried before.

Buy in Bulk

During the summer months, condiments are a big seller in stores. While you can often find a good deal on small batches, depending on the store, buying in bulk is sure to save you money. Mustard, ketchup, and mayo can be bought in large sizes at bulk warehouses for a fraction of the cost that you’d pay in-store for the same amount. Purchase reusable squirt bottles and transfer your condiments into them, so you aren’t lugging around bulk size containers. Store your bulk containers in the fridge and just bring out the small squirt bottles when you grill. They are less cumbersome and easier to manage.

You can do the same for hamburger buns and hotdog rolls, too. Store what you aren’t using in the freezer, and just pull out the buns that you need for the night. Throwing them on the grill, or in a toaster, will ensure they are perfect when dinner time rolls around.

Consider Buying Non-Convenience Items

Chicken breasts that are skinned and boned might seem like an easy way to throw something on the grill, but you are paying a premium for the convenience. Organic chicken breasts can cost anywhere from $5.00 to $8.00 a pound, depending on sales and your location. Buying a whole chicken is substantially cheaper, per pound, and you’ll end up with many more meals. When you buy a whole chicken, you can cut it up and use it for multiple meals, or various recipes.

The same is true for pre-made hamburger patties. Sure, it might seem easier to buy premade patties and chuck them on the grill, but buying ground beef, seasoning it yourself, and making your own patties can save about $1 or more per pound. The added bonus is you can flavor your burger to suit your needs or the needs of your family, too.

Make Your Own

Whether you are an iced coffee aficionado or a sweet tea fiend, procuring your drinks from retailers can be costly. Instead, consider making pitchers of your favorite summer beverage in advance, so they are ready to go when a craving takes hold. Travel tumblers also make it easy to take your favorite summer beverage with you wherever you go.

Now that you know how to save on your summer food budget, you’ll have more cash to enjoy the warm weather and long daylight hours. Remember, you don’t have to give up the finer things in life, like delicious summer food, to keep on budget, you just need to find creative ways to enjoy your favorite things.
