Five Unconventional Jobs That Can Make You Rich

When you think of well-paying jobs, what career paths come to mind? Doctors and lawyers are notoriously well-paid. Dentists, CPAs, architects, and software engineers also do very well. But what if you are not in love with any of these career paths and still want to do well financially? You can follow your own path and still enjoy financial success. Here are 5 unconventional jobs that pay unexpectedly well.

1. Plane Repossession Agent

Most people in the repossession industry are reclaiming cars, appliances, and other relatively low-value items. However, there is also a need for repossession agents who can track down airplanes.

Most plane repo agents work for banks, tracking down planes that customers have stopped paying on. Agents in this field need a specific set of skills. They must be good detectives — able to track down where a plane is isn’t easy — and they must also be able to fly a plane. Because this job is so dangerous, it pays very well. You could repossess just a few planes per year and be living quite luxuriously.

2. Commercial Pipeline Diver

If you love scuba diving, you could put your scuba skills to professional use. Companies that maintain natural gas and other pipelines below water, need divers to go down to inspect and maintain the equipment. If you learn how to weld, you could even work as an underwater welder — they're known to earn multiple six figures per year.

3. Ghostwriter

Do you have a talent with the written word? Although the term “starving writer” is often tossed around, there are actually ways to make quite a fortune as a writer. One option is to ghostwrite books or other publications for well-known figures.

For example, you could ghostwrite the autobiography of a famous politician, star athlete, or convicted criminal. Often, these people have a story to tell, and that story is very marketable, but they lack the writing skills to tell the story well themselves. Tell the story for them, and you could take home a significant portion of the earnings.

4. Food Scientist

Have you ever wondered what makes chips so addictive, or why strawberry candy can taste so much like real strawberries? This is the work of food scientists — knowledgeable folks who spend their days concocting tasty treats. As a food scientist, you may work on developing new flavorings, perfecting formulas to give a good a specific texture, and so much more.

There are university programs in food science, but some food scientists come into this industry with an education in chemistry and biology, as well as a strong passion for food. You’ll be earning the food companies you work for a lot of money, and they’ll pay you well in return.

5. Hippotherapist

This may be one of the most unconventional jobs, and it does not actually involve hippos. Hippotherapists use horses as a means of providing therapy for patients. They often integrate horses and horseback riding into physical therapy for patients who are recovering from injuries, dealing with a congenital lack of muscle tone, or suffering from chronic conditions like arthritis.

Some hippotherapists focus more on mental health, using horses to boost mood and fight symptoms of depression and anxiety. If you’ve always wanted to work with people and animals, this is a way to earn a significant income in doing so.

You don’t necessarily need to be a doctor or lawyer to accumulate wealth. Think outside the box, and follow your own path in life. These unconventional jobs will definitely keep you engaged, and they pay well to boot.
