Scammers may impersonate Independent Bank employees to gain control of your account.

Independent Bank is warning Treasury Management customers to stay alert for a new scam involving fraudsters posing as members of our Fraud Department. This scam is designed to appear legitimate and can result in unauthorized access to business banking systems and attempted high-dollar transactions.

How It Works

Scammers are calling business customers and falsely identifying themselves as representatives from Independent Bank’s Fraud Department. These fraudsters are using spoofed phone numbers to make the call appear to come from Independent Bank.

In this scheme, the caller may try to convince a Treasury Management user to delete their online user profile. Doing so can allow the fraudster to take control of the account and access additional user profiles—putting business funds at risk. 

What to Look For

Independent Bank will never ask you to:

  • Share your login credentials or passwords over the phone

  • Ask you to delete your TreasuryONE profile over the phone

Independent Bank works directly with your Treasury or account officer to contact you in the case of suspected fraud on your account. Our fraud department does not contact customers. If you receive a suspicious call or request of this nature, hang up immediately and call us directly at 800.530.3719 or contact your Treasury Management support team.

What You Can Do

We encourage all Treasury Management users to:

  • Confirm suspicious activity directly with your Treasury Management representative

  • Review and limit user access within your online banking platform

  • Enable available security features such as dual control or alerts for ACH transactions

  • Regularly educate your team on how to identify fraudulent requests
