Leslie High School recently announced that Denise Wheaton will be honored as the 2011 Distinguished Alumna for Leslie High School.

Denise is a 1971 graduate of Leslie High School. She has served as senior vice president with Independent Bank since 1987. Prior to the consolidation of the bank, Wheaton was also the interim president of Independent Bank South Michigan from May through September 2007. In her service at Independent Bank, Wheaton helps manage the bank’s assets and network of full-service banking and loan offices. Regionally, Wheaton offers community banking leadership to 22 markets, and directs branch and retail administration. Her statewide duties include Retail Banking Leadership, where she works to develop customer sales and service strategies, and retail deposit products and services.

Denise holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Northwood University. She completed an intensive three-year program at the Bank Administration Institute’s School of Bank Administration in Madison, Wisconsin, with a specific focus of study on bank management.

As a leader in her local community, she serves as a board trustee of Hayes Green Beach Hospital in Charlotte. She is also active in several mid-Michigan community volunteer efforts and serves on a variety of boards and commissions, including the Lansing Community College Foundation Board, the Capital Area Women’s Lifestyle Magazine Advisory Board and the LEAP Banking and Insurance Advisory Board.

The Distinguished Alumni Award will be presented during the Leslie High School Honors Convocation on Thursday, June 2.
