Growing financial literacy across Michigan
March 11, 2009
Since 1864, Independent Bank has been helping communities grow throughout Michigan. We understand that the need for financial literacy in our communities transcends the current economic conditions. We are committed to equipping Michigan families with the tools needed to make healthy financial decisions now and in the future. Through outreach programs for children, adults and seniors, we are working to build knowledge that helps people of all ages develop healthy financial habits.
For children, understanding money and finances at an early age can lead to lifelong practices of saving and financial planning. That’s why Independent Bank associates throughout the state participate in National Teach Children to Save Day each spring and Get Smart About Credit Day each fall.
In partnership with the American Bankers Association Education Foundation, Independent Bank associates visit local schools in their communities to teach children and young adults about the importance of saving and wise use of credit. In 2008, 140 Independent Bank associates visited schools and presented financial literacy lessons, reaching 6,407 Michigan students.
Because it is never too late to start learning about money management, budgeting and clean credit living, Independent Bank has partnered with GreenPath, Inc. to offer the Community Advantage Program. Through the program, customers, associates and their family members have access to experienced financial counselors. The counselors can help them understand their credit report and how they can improve their score, build a personal or family budget, deal with a job loss, manage debt or plan for their first home purchase.
So, no matter what life brings, Independent Bank is working to provide the tools that will help people in our communities adjust to a changing economic reality and continue on a path to success.
