Independent Bank launches local literacy program

December 19, 2008

Independent Bank associates are volunteering their time this school year to help local elementary school students improve skills in reading and writing. The program began when the school principal, Sue Spahr, approached the Cedar Springs Rotary Club looking for local businesses willing to volunteer. Rotary President and Independent Bank Manager Julie Wheeler presented the idea to her staff and found they were very excited about the opportunity.

“I admire the teachers for the work they are doing and am glad we can help by providing additional one-on-one attention for the children,” said Julie Wheeler of Independent Bank’s Cedar Springs office.

The program brings Independent Bank associates into one of the school’s kindergarten or first grade classrooms each day of the week to provide valuable small group and one-on-one time with students. Currently, 10 associates from the Cedar Springs banking office participate in the program, each spending one hour every other week working with students on numbers, reading and writing.

By reaching the students at the beginning of their elementary education, the program helps students sharpen their skills in these key areas, preparing them for more advanced reading in later grades.

“Kindergarten and first grade are incredibly important years for children. During these years we are building the spring boards to propel them into the exciting world of reading and learning,” said Mrs. Tacoma, kindergarten teacher at Cedar Trails Elementary. “We are grateful to our volunteers, the children truly enjoy sharing with their special reading friends.”
