Independent Bank associates across the state participate in Get Smart About Credit Day

Independent Bank associates across Michigan participated in National Get Smart About Credit Day in October by visiting local high schools and providing lessons about credit, budgeting and identity theft protection.

In partnership with the American Bankers Association Education Foundation, financial leaders throughout the country spoke with local young people about the importance of developing and maintaining healthy financial habits early in life.

This fall, 34 Independent Bank associates visited schools throughout the state to present lessons, reaching a total of 1,508 students.

Using lesson plans and resources from the ABA, Independent Bank associates presented to students in grades 9 through 12. The lesson plans provided practical information about how credit works, recognizing the warning signs of credit trouble and the link between budgeting and the responsible use of credit. Through hands-on exercises and lessons, students learned how financial decisions, especially those made in young adulthood, will have an impact for years to come.

“Reaching students locally is important because many of us live and work in the communities we serve,” said Mike Magee, president and CEO of Independent Bank. “As financial professionals, it’s rewarding to share our expertise; we believe students who demonstrate responsible use of credit will experience life-long benefits.”
